Week #4 June 10th

Check out this article:
https://oncourse.iu.edu/access/content/user/whiteme/Cluck_2C_20Cluck.pdf

I love this article because it is a perfect example of how everything is constantly progressing. The internet was originally developed for information sharing between Universities. As it became more accessible it was a natural choice for public/school libraries collection development. Now that the Internet has developed into an uncontrollable beast, What do we do? It is a library’s responsibility to provide information no matter the vehicle. Unfortunately the vehicle is currently being used by perverts, porn stars, and pedophiles.

If everyone would just play by the rules this wouldn’t have happened! Why can everyone just be normal!( I know there is no real definition of normal.)

So, now that the Internet exists and is available for us in 97% of libraries, the question is, “What can we do to stay ahead?”

I agree libraries need to use the Internet as a means to provide information, and I think librarians need to educate people about the Internet. But I don't feel like librarians need to be the Internet police for their patrons. Library users need to take some responsibility for themselves when using the Internet. We can try to stay ahead, but there will always be the unexpected issues to deal with.

Hi, I had trouble accessing the article you posted. But I don't know if I like the idea that the internet needs to be controlled. The internet may have started as information sharing between Universities, but I like how it is grown and developed. If it were not for that development, we wouldn't have Web 2.0 or 3.0. I think that the internet as a scary place that pedophiles have usurped may be more of a media-driven scare tactic (Chris Hanson). In my normal everyday internet use, I rarely come across porn, pedophiles, etc. Unless one is looking for that sort of thing, the internet is a relatively "safe" place. But I wasn't able to access your article, so maybe it says something different.

I agree with Jamie with librarians not being the internet police for patrons. We can do what we are capable of doing to stay ahead, and educate our patrons so they can make an informed decision while using the internet.

I agree with Jamie that people are responsible for themselves on the internet. It is unfortunate, but I think most people aren't even that shocked anymore when they come across porn while surfing the net. Personally, I'm more annoyed than offended. As far as internet safety, offering classes at the library or at least making information available is a good way to make sure people know how to stay safe.
